Dean, not far from a half century young, you accomplished much more than some will ever accomplish; or even set-out to embark on, in their entire lifetime. You packed a lot of livin’ into nearly five decades, a mix of fun and hard work, and that has not gone unnoticed, unappreciated, nor will it ever be forgotten.
I didn’t experience your presence like close friends and family did in those younger years, as I was four years your junior, lived in Waterloo, and danced-up-a-storm with my mother in that other Tiffin-downline on weekends. But ultimately, it was your personality above all that drew you closer in time; that easy-going nature, approachability, sense of humour, humility, not to mention your get-up-and-go’ness that opened the gate and united both sides of the family. My late-father, mother, brother (his wife), and my other half all share this vision of you… and so, when it comes right down to it… you’re that fun-loving down-to-earth guy with a huge heart – who we all enjoyed pulling closer and we were lucky enough to have gotten to know you better.
Our commonalities in personality, music, and tech, made it feel as though you were my ‘brother-from-another-mother’, and not simply a second cousin. Looking back, ironically, I responded ‘hello brother!!!’ to your last set of texts less than two weeks ago, unbeknownst to me that I’d be writing this memoir about you so soon. I smile now, knowing the connection felt, was actually expressed while we were both breathing, before the opportunity to do so had elapsed. I’m grateful.
I’m genuinely heartbroken by your unexpected passing. The news left me stunned. I can still hear your voice in my head from earlier in the week when we conversed to the wee hours of the morning, empathizing with each other about the trials and tribulations of life, favourite comedians, health and emotions, motorcycles and e-bikes, software and file conversion, not even four days earlier. Even though life in recently years had been difficult, I was delighted to hear your calm demeanour restored, positive outlook on life in-place, and we were on the look-out to hit up a comedy show in our not-so-distant-future – ultimately, to spend time together and lighten the load off our shoulders a lil. You told me that you ‘wanted to experience what it was like to live again’, and I was looking forward to sharing that with you. And that, my friend, is what makes it difficult now, having to march to the beat of a similar drum, however, without you. You were taken too soon.
We had the ability to catch up with each other as if it were yesterday. Personal or business, the topic didn’t seem to matter. I’m thankful you trusted in me to brand your company and build your website, you were respectable and a delight to work with. I’m so proud of you and your career successes. I also enjoyed our many conversations about owning our own businesses. Your effort to ensure you paid your last respects to my side of the family when one passed, even when company bereavement terms didn’t stretch near that far to account for the time needed, greatly admired. I want to apologize for demanding I be the only buyer of your Peavey drum set (about a decade ago, or so). Once I heard you were planning to sell it, I gave you lil option. Sorry, not sorry. Especially now. You can trust in me to never let the beat drop, though give me time, but I’m sure I’ll never compare to you. You affixed the humble words: ‘Nuthin’ Fancy’, to customize your bass kick-drum head, and that always resonated with me. Feel free to give me pointers from above. Whether we were gallivanting around Wingham, havin’ a hoot with my family in Belfast, stopped by for a visit at the trailer or either of your homes in Kitchener or Baden, these shared experiences I will truly cherish from here on out. They are like none other, so I will remember them fondly.
Deep down to the core, thank you for being you.
For walking to the beat of your own drum.
Please know, this isn’t goodbye Cuz…
Till we meet again.
You will be truly missed.
- Janet
*Note: I'm sure my dad (Dave McGlynn) will have a beer with ya in heaven, Dean.
